Velobiotics™
Science That Survives

How supercritical CO₂ microencapsulation protects probiotics where they matter most.

1000× more live bacteria reach your gut. Proven by science.

The Probiotic Problem

99% of Standard Probiotics Never Reach Your Gut

When you swallow a standard probiotic capsule, stomach acid attacks immediately. Most bacteria die before reaching your intestines — rendering the supplement virtually useless.

🔥

Stomach Acid

pH 2 environment destroys up to 99% of bacteria in minutes

💧

Moisture & Heat

Probiotics degrade during storage, especially in tropical climates

⏰

Shelf Life Collapse

CFU counts drop below therapeutic levels before you even open the bottle

Result: You think you're taking 10 billion CFU. Your gut actually receives 10-100 million. That's why standard probiotics often fail — and why women end up back at the pharmacy within weeks.

The Solution

Velobiotics™ Microencapsulation
Protects Where It Counts

Microencapsulation Process

How It Works

Velobiotics uses supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO₂) technology to wrap each probiotic bacterium in a protective polymer shell. This isn't a crude coating — it's a precisely engineered microscopic fortress.

The shell remains intact in the harsh acidic environment of your stomach (pH 2). When it reaches your small intestine (pH 6.8), the shell dissolves and releases the bacteria exactly where they can colonize and thrive.

What Velobiotics™ Protects Against

  • Stomach acid (pH 2) — zero bacteria loss
  • Bile salts in the small intestine
  • Oxidative stress during storage
  • Heat degradation in warehouses & pharmacies
  • Moisture absorption — extended shelf life

The Velobiotics™ Advantage

  • 1000× more bacteria reach your gut alive
  • Controlled release in the small intestine
  • No need for refrigeration
  • Stable at room temperature for years
  • CFU counts remain therapeutic until expiry date

Proven by Science

The Research Behind Velobiotics™

Developed through collaboration between CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) and biotech scientists, Velobiotics™ is backed by peer-reviewed research.

Study 1: Gastric Acid Survival

Finding: Velobiotics™-encapsulated Bifidobacterium longum showed "little to no release" in simulated gastric fluid (pH 2) and "substantial release" in simulated intestinal fluid (pH 6.8).

Limited reduction in viable counts — the bacteria survive the stomach intact.

Study 2: Heat Stability & Shelf Life

Finding: Velobiotics™ encapsulation retained viable bacteria levels above therapeutic minimum for 10–12 weeks at 30°C (warehouse/pharmacy temperature). This extended shelf life by 4–7 weeks compared to unencapsulated probiotics.

Room-temperature stable. No refrigeration needed. Therapeutic potency maintained.

Study 3: Polymer Complex Formation

Finding: Supercritical CO₂ creates an interpolymer complex (PVP:PVAc-CA) that encapsulates bacteria without water, heat, or organic solvents — preserving bacterial viability during the encapsulation process itself.

Gentler on bacteria than traditional microencapsulation methods.

Femina Product Lineup

Which Products Use Velobiotics™?

Not all Femina products use Velobiotics™ — because not all products need it.

✓

Uses Velobiotics™

Femina™ 10-Strain Probiotic Capsules

Contains 10 Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains, each protected by Velobiotics™ microencapsulation + cranberry extract.

Why: Oral delivery requires stomach-acid protection for maximum efficacy.

Future: Femina Probiotic Meal Replacements and gut-health supplements will also use Velobiotics™ technology.

—

Does NOT Use Velobiotics™

Femina COOKIE FRESH Suppositories

Contains boric acid (antifungal/antibacterial) + probiotics for local vaginal application.

Why: Local delivery directly to vagina — no GI tract protection needed.

Femina Boric Acid Only Suppositories

Pure pharmaceutical-grade boric acid for pH reset.

Why: Chemical compound — doesn't need biological protection.

The Technology, Explained

Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (scCO₂)

When CO₂ is compressed to specific pressure and temperature, it becomes a "supercritical fluid" — acting as both liquid and gas. This allows polymers to dissolve and form perfect encapsulation shells around delicate bacteria without water, heat, or organic solvents that would kill them.

Interpolymer Complex (PVP:PVAc-CA)

Two food-grade polymers form a tight matrix around the bacteria. This complex is stable at low pH (stomach) but disintegrates at higher pH (intestines) — triggering controlled release exactly where probiotics can colonize.

pH-Responsive Release

The encapsulation shell is engineered to respond to pH. Stomach acid? Shell stays sealed. Small intestine? Shell dissolves. This targeted release ensures bacteria are released in the optimal environment for colonization.
